Australia State of the Environment 2006 Report (2006)

Land and Water Australia

Land and Water Australia is a statutory research and development corporation within the Australian Government Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry portfolio. Its mandate is to provide national leadership in generating knowledge, debate, innovation, and action in sustainable natural resource management.


National Land and Water Resources Audit

The National Land and Water Resources Audit was established in 1997 under the Natural Heritage Trust Act. The Audit has now finished its second phase of operation and is no longer active. However, it remains an important source of information on sustainable development, providing data, information and nationwide assessments of Australia’s land, water and biological resources. This site contains an online atlas, access to a data library, information sheets, final reports, publication guidelines, toolkits, event information, media releases, and news archives. Information about the following topics can be obtained on this site: estuarine coastal and marine; integrated natural resource management; invasive species; land salinity; land use; rivers and wetlands; socio-economic factors; soils; species and communities; sustainable agriculture; vegetation and water. The site also includes information on projects such as data and information management; national coordination committees; natural resource management monitoring; and signposts for Australian agriculture.

The Environmental Portal, managed by the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, (http://www.environment.gov.au/index.html), provides access to online services and information according to eight broad environmental themes: Antarctica and other external territories; atmosphere; biodiversity; coasts and oceans; human settlements; inland waters; land; national and cultural heritage.
